I would say focus on grouping and learning how to CC first before trying to master charming. Charming will come later in levels and you will have plenty of opportunities to master it. Best opportunities come when you have a solid group to protect you if a charm breaks. But a chanters job first and foremost is CCing. If you're 8 I would say go check out crush bone. Get a group and start collecting those belts. You can sell them for some decent starting money and then gear your self up. As an enchanter AC isn't important. Like others have said you will want HP and CHA gear. Or being low level any gear with INT or mana. If you want a group you'll just have to send tells or /ooc lvl 8 enchanter LFG. You'll usually get picked up pretty quick because enchanters are pretty valuable to any group.
Soloing can be hard on an enchanter until you learn how to charm effectively. I would just group up for now. Plus those CCing skills you learn in group will be very important later on.
One more thing. XP is very slow in EQ. It's a grind for sure.
