Plat is pretty hard to come by on p99. Granted it's now 2018 so people are much more informed than they were in 1999-2001. The best source of plat is from other players at this point on Project 1999. Farm an item worth a few thousand plat, run to EC, /auction your item and hope someone buys it!
I've never played monk extensively but my advise is to save up for good weapons and 2x
platinum fire wedding rings.
