For what it's worth, I did find that EQ put in a feature the tried to prevent deaths like this from occurring:

It's one of the downsides of internet latency. The "pop back at savepoint" is a second chance to get out of the zone. So perhaps indeed a fix for this issue could be 'classic'. It may not put you in WC, but maybe your 'last save point' (unsure what that means really) or at the zone 'safe spot'.
