The Baelish conclusion would have been fine if they didn't already do the same play in Season 6 as far as reversing the game on him goes. They should have continued building him up for the big fall and deleted the Season 6 finale scene.
The reason why the Baelish conclusion isn't good writing is because of a lot of different reasons, but transparency is the biggest one.
Anyway season 7, the dead screen time they spent on episodes 1-3, and the rapid progression of storyline would seem to signal that they aren't comfortable writing without source material. Not that they can't, but that they WILL NOT.
I believe D&D refused to find writers to write.
This season also confirms the spin-off shows and D&D's lack of involvement as a positive. Someone had mentioned that D&D are just bro-fans of the books and that they told GRRM R+L=whatever and GRRM gave them the job based on them being able to figure it out on their own from reading the books.
