Are you hitting the 'pg up' key? Similar to swimming, Page Up and Page Down can manipulate going up in down in the air as well.
Beyond that, it is also tied to your fps. With 100 fps, I can float very well. If I do something that causes my fps to drop, such as tabbing out then I will start dropping out of the air

Definitely more than likely the fps thing, or your internet could be laggy. Check your options and raise your max fps.
