According to posts from Allakhazam at
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=14 circa 2000-2001, the Red V quest should be rewarding small patchwork armor (instead of the small cloth pieces it's currently giving), various rusty weapons, small round shields, the Bullsmasher, and Iony's absorber.
