Are you going to quad to level? You can start quadding at level 8 if you want to. If quadding, you'll want some +mana items for sure. Base mana pool may not be enough early on. Quest a flux staff at level 20 to make tagging mobs a breeze (you'll use this forever, amazing item.) Obviously some kind of speed boost is needed too, either jboots, sow pots, or you can level near druid rings or just port to EC once you're high enough level.
Other than that, wizards don't really benefit from gear much outside of really high level stuff. If you make it to 60, aim for a Velk/Rend robe, epic staff, and Manna Robe in that order.
Wizards are great on raids. They're decent dps on boss mobs when you can use your full mana bar. They're critical for rapid mobilization and getting to Hate/Sky. And best of all, they're really easy and low stress to play.
