Porting is sometimes just more relaxing than other means of making cash. Can watch TV or do other shit and just watch for tells without having to worry about getting owned. Maybe even chat with a mofucka or two.

Setting fees up front seems kinda pointless as some tips are way higher than average and somewhat make up for the broke folks. Broke asses won't pay them anyway so all you'd be doing is discouraging the higher tipping folks.

As far as greed goes I almost never turn down any port requests but if you are higher level and regularly tipping next to nothing I will probably ignore you. As in just not reply, not /ignore. Or if you want some sort of special request and I have a few ports in front of you I will probably tell you no or let you know it will be a while. Lastly if you are low level and/or broke and begging for 10 ports a day I will probably stop replying also. I mean really, you can walk. It's part of the low level EQ experience.

I don't understand the entitlement/hate. No one is entitled to a port. People don't have a DAP character because they want to sit around all day being the friendly charity porter. If you want to do that more power to you. I'm sure you're a sweetheart and all the chicks will realize it and leave that asshole they've been dating for you once they find out. Keep your armor polished today could be the day!

Choosing independent porters may make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside but when DAP people make less money and find something more lucrative to do it will just result in less easy to find ports for everyone. Way to ruin the server, commies.
