yeah she shouldnt have done that. she could have taken his hand and then glanced and tilted her head down at it very briefly as she continued walking to send a subtle non-verbal that she is surprised by it.
Angela Merkel does that all the time. She will go along with inappropriate stuff as not to rebuff and create an even BIGGER optics problem, but send little non-verbals that only real people can see
O-Giginal is right there was a bigger optics problem created by Melania trying to maintain a certain optic.
