You're right, no mouse wheel zoom. I don't think my mouse even had a wheel back then. But you could zoom in and out using buttons. I think it was 7 and 1 on the number pad. Pretty sure it was.

Correct, classic didn't support a scroll wheel because scroll wheels hadn't been invented yet.
