The player made time sink does not work. The math is bad because you are just trading less man hours for more man hours in the long run. For example, someone is playing this game until Pantheon is released. This is a fun time sink for 2 years while you wait. You are a tracker. You initiate 16 hours of tracking every 4 weeks for a mob. It takes your 2 years of tracking before you get 70% BiS. Pantheon gets released and you still haven't gotten that last 30%. You continue playing EQ casually to finish that last 30% even though Pantheon is released. If you were already full BiS you would of quit because you feel accomplished. You don't want to quit at 70%, you keep playing when you could of already quit had you joined a raid guild and took 75% of the mobs. Another hypothetical situation for you.
