don't expect either of them to invest more time in parsing political platitudes or ridiculous rhetoric than they do deciding whether or not they like tomatoes. it also wise though to refrain from assuming all who disagree with you necessarily exist oblivious to the world in the basket of dumbs. there are always intelligent people on both sides of an argument of scale and they are always a minority, but understanding them is critically important in discovery of truth. you can't both be right and you can't begin to unravel who really is if you've already decided. and even if you are right, you will be unable to dismantle opposing views if you do not understand them.

There are intelligent people who voted for Trump for one reason or another, to whom your point applies and I agree.
But those weren't the people who made the election go the way it did. It was populism at its worst, which I'm naive to even lament about. It's exactly what our system was designed to defend against. Here I am spending the last several years whining about money in politics, and what happens when someone finally wins an election without buying it? Donald Trump. No thanks, I get it now. I don't blame the elite, I blame the Americans who put them there. Totally unqualified to run a republic.
