necro/shaman/cleric/enchanter would all be good choices. Necro for its general awesomeness when soloing anyways. I would stay away from mage/wizard/druid as options, their skills wouldn't synergize as well with a ranger.
Shaman for having the start of a good group (especially at later levels) while providing buffs/heals/DPS.
Cleric for also having the start of a good group, great heals, and fear kiting (ranger snare, cleric fear). Kills would be the slowest with the Cleric but could be sped up by prioritizing on undead.
Enc+ranger can fear kite also, plus having the buffs. Enc can also mez/stun mobs if they resist snare and keep them that way till snare lands and then proceed to fear kite. They have some DoT action and nuke action. If you use your pets smart they can help add a lot to your DPS too.
If duo'ing with another melee, Shadowknight would be the best option so you could fear kite. Monk would be possible, let them do the tanking and have the ranger carry a bunch of bandages to help minimize downtime.
However if you do go with 2 melee options, you're never going to come close to ranger + one of the caster options listed above in terms of duo efficiency and you're going to hurt your group desirability since ranger is a non-essential grouping class.
I'd have to say Enchanter/Ranger would likely be the best option if you want to balance the amount of xp you gain as a duo while also having good group desirability.
If you're doing a flat out duo and will never ever group, then go with the necro.
