I still think obtenebrate is the best eq word, great way for describing a neighborhood safe from eavesdroppers.

As someone who spent a few years working as a writing tutor / ghost writer for admissions stuff, you'd be amazed how bad people are on average. It's why employers were bitching to universities about how all their graduates were illiterate so most of them have writing exit exams now. Doubt most college students would know those words, but I think you know that and you're just looking for madz
