There has been a lot of discussion in the past about the state of Superman's relatability to the readership. When this complaint gets brought up often the counter to it is the fact that he was adopted by normal Earth parents, and works a regular 9-5. But if you look at the complaints against the character when it comes to his relatability usually the issue is with his physical differences from humans and that they really couldn't care less what job he works or who his parents were. His alien physiology, his powers and the simple things people need that he doesn't, food and sleep are what create the dissonance between the character and the public. His lack of discernible motivation like a dead Waynes or dead Uncle Ben moment also seems to be reoccurring problem that comes up for people. It makes it hard for people to grasp why he runs around saving the world if he has no exciting incident that pushes him to becoming a superhero.

In Superman's origin there's a tragedy that dwarfs Batman's: the loss of his entire planet, as well as his natural parents. Add to that an old fashioned Christian upbringing by loving foster parents who had an abiding faith that their son was given profound gifts expressly to help others... and i would hope anybody would see how Superman would grow up wanting to help others with all the resources of his character.
