I'd say luck, skill, and work ethic hold people back or raise them up. Regardless, responsibility is a must, but US culture did away with that shit with the baby boomers (folks fucking shit up right now) who think that freedom doesn't carry responsibility yet every critical thought regarding freedom says it does because it is a human and only human concept.
