I blame a lot of it on extreme news on both sides stirring up shit. I live in Alabama and I'm mixed Asian and white. Socially I'm very moderate if not liberal. However when you see daily the abuse of welfare system it makes you cringe. A lot of people down here aren't bigots and extreme right. They are stuggling middle class that is wondering why my tax dollars aren't going to better things like education or roads or hell anything except people that shouldn't be here or abusing the system to do less and live on it instead of using it as a stepping stone to better yourself.

I too live here, and would be ultraconservative but I simply blend in invisibly. I get to live because of invisibility cloaking. Because I'm not a political target. I'm overlooked, even though I've done no wrong. I'm part of the super mega mainstream monoculture. It's ok. I don't think I'd stand out if things where different anyway.
People here aren't bad, they also aren't ready to know the truth about me.
It's frustrating. I don't want to fight them.
