Content in this game involves sitting on your ass to regenerate mana or pressing the kick button every few seconds for countless hours just to increment a level number. It would be a commercial failure compared to the polished turd MMOs we have today with story driven quests and well designed dungeon content. Then again there's plenty of grind heavy MMOs in the Korean market, but their combat is more involved than EQ which is the appeal.

You aren't getting it. MMOs replaced downtime, danger and high risk versus high reward (sitting on your hands), with low risk and non-stop action combat that devalued your accomplishments ... and yet these new games aren't even drawing as many active accounts as EQ did. In fact, most of them can't even survive on the subscription model.
Not that I think an EQ clone or even Pantheon will ever be "the next big thing", but there are a lot of people who will appreciate that model more than the current. People want a little mystery and danger in their MMO. They want to be able to fail. That was what made EQ great and different. You had to put your time on the line.
