Of course he didn't present it as a metaphor. His supporters wanted a real wall and he seized on that. It doesn't mean he ever intended to build one out of bricks or actually make it 10' higher or actually have Mexico finance it by writing checks to the US government though. A 'wall' can be comprised of a great many things beyond brick and mortar and 'paying' for something can be done in many forms ^^

It was a brilliant strategy because when he starts discussing it, his supporters will be too embarrassed to admit they took it literally and his opponents will be shouting, "No, no, no, no, NO! You said you were going to build a wall, so build it, or are you a liar?" And Trump will come out the good guy^^ Careful with the charge ^.~v

Of course he could surprise me and actually build a 50' tall wall *shrugs*
