at low levels the last level before new spells is usually pretty rough.

When you got lvl 4 your pet was wreckin shop, which is awesome, but then at lvl 7 it's the same pet fighting harder mobs so it gets tough.

As you get higher level, that gap begins to narrow down much more. And honestly, being able to kill an even con mob is something some lvl 7 classes cannot do, so don't get down on yourself for that. Kill blues. they're easier, safer, and faster, which then translates into more xp.

As far as your question about buying a weapon. Don't. at your level save money for spells.

Also, do some research on the forums or wiki for mage guides. There's no need to reinvent the wheel, and there's no shame is doing research on your class and different strategies for success.

Something to consider as a mage is that if your pet does 50% or more damage to a target, you lose half the xp for that target. This doesn't happen if you're grouped. So find groups, make friends, and enjoy the ride that this game can offer.

Also Also, as a caster, you must play the fizzle drinking game. If your spell fizzles, you take a drink. Makes the game much more entertaining.
Absolutely, this. Once you get your next pet at 8 you will have an easier time once again if you use reclaim energy to re-summon pet until you have a white/yellow con pet. You will see this pattern repeat for a while where your pet when you first get it is powerful and then the level before your next pet it starts to feel weak.

I have recently started up a mage and they are very powerful at lower levels but have some quirks about them that you have to accept. Also, if you can group with at least one other person I think that is best. You can manage your mana more efficiently and not worry about the pet stealing all your XP.

Another thing you might do if you can put together a few hundred plat would be to start buying the components for at least one pet focus. I like water pet personally because it seems to have a good mix of DPS and survivability and with with the focus it's a beast. It will make your pet 25% stronger which is a pretty huge upgrade. It will cost you 100p for the stein, maybe 100p for the gem and maybe 50p for the other 2 parts. Good luck!
