Yea I just thought that was so disgusting. The fact that this is the type of thinking that characterizes fiscal conservatives, I understand. The contempt for taxes and patriotism--yes, you can't be a patriot if you have no sense of civic duty, or any duty other than to yourself. I've come to accept that's how they work and it's not going to change.
But extend this further. These people would probably react the same way to powering our economy on coal and just generally raping the planet. That type of activity is super efficient. It benefits us, somewhat, in the short run. So if you're motivated purely by immediate self interest, it is 'smart'. It's also reprehensible.
