Last time I went through it most of the same vestigial content was there, but without the same quests and no group would even consider taking another route than a 10 minute run to the last boss (who no longer spawned bomblets)

This is accurate. The boss was watered down.
Deadmines also was nerfed big time if I remember correctly. Massive overhaul in difficulty and bosses a long time ago.
