That niche specifically, when it comes to MMORPGs, being fans of MUDs, D&D, lore-ridden epics, or early early games that were heavily influenced by any of those. The
majority don't give a shit about storytelling in gaming anymore, or making friends and journeying with them. That's not where the money is anymore. An online MMORPG now is a game you solo on, instance to get your bonus exp, then part ways and never hear from those people again. Community isn't marketable anymore unless you're still in that niche. Thus why there is an emulation of a 17/18 year old game that still has a dedicated player base.
Will it ever make a comeback? I doubt it, but it's possible if people in that niche made something fresh. Ya know, instead of trolling people's efforts to do just that or dismissing them because of personal life problems that have nothing to do with the game.
