My usual is root, mez, ae mez, stun, stun, charm (for now, but it will be ToT once I'm 51 and I'm in a zone with casters), two swappable slots for gems 1-8. Seems safest to me, having much control always ready... even though it is a pain to swap spells so much... especially if you're getting adds so one of the slots needs to be tash basically all the time. When leveling there's some wiggle room to keep a nuke ready imo, usually instead of ae mez depending on the kind of pulls you are getting.
A root or a single-target mez is basically a must for slot 1 since that slot gives bonus refresh with a clicky and those are spells you'll often need to cast repeatedly in succession.
