I checked Thugardin set : it has a bit more AC but less STR and STA than the enchanted dwarven Plate set (besides the BP), not much of an upgrade I think.

But with third armor a dwarf can have a can opener for a helm!!!
You can also consider trying to obtain
http://wiki.project1999.com/Righteous_Armor instead of thug armor. No quest turn ins for it but requires a raid force.
