I have a friend who still maintains to this day that if he had a baseball bat he could take 2 chimpanzees in a fight to the death. Chimps are one of the most violent animals on the planet, where as gorillas are generally pretty passive.
Chances are there was a way to save the gorilla, but it would have been a risk. I'm not sure about gorillas, but a chimp is about x3 stronger then it looks -- and there a good 4-5 ft tall.
A chimp has muscles that are a lot stronger than humans, so your friend doesn't realize he is comparing apples to guns. They also do things like bite your genitals off if they get the chance.
