His big concern is not getting thumped, it's that there is no server economy and as an SK no way to really gear up. Is he correct or would it be possible for a duo to have fun?
Second question as long as we're here -- If you were an SK, Bard or Necro who can heal as your partner? Not doing Cleric this go around, no thanks.

Most new players will take a lot of lumps until they learn the server.
Necro will probably help camp more gear / money. Bard will be faster leveling for swarming zones up.
Either way, get some levels under your belt and all classes have some specific armor that you can get. PM if you need help.
