I am pretty sure you can give your pet a high damage slow 2h weapon at low levels and it will make it hit much harder with same delay. Try it out with a rusty 2h with around 10 dmg and see if that works.

Can confirm, they will max hit for 2x weapon damage (+1?). This is a great way to make your pets killers in the level 1-12ish range, but it makes outdamaging them to avoid 50% xp loss even harder.
