It's not just about making the individual characters better it is mostly about class make up. DKP entices people to play worthless PvE classes because they will progress regardless. No, it won't kill you if a cleric doesn't get a belt over some druid but it will hurt if they decide to say fuck it, they can get the same upgrades being afk as an SK.
If upgrades come easier for needed PvE classes (as it should be) than more people will play them.
