Yeah, bone chips and pelts are a good way to get money. I wouldn't worry "too much" about gear though. That's more important soloing, and you'll be duoing or forming a group I imagine 100% of the time?
Eventually you'll have saved enough, or are high enough level that you can get some decent stuff (banded, for example, is only 90p.) Also, if you pick your camps well, you can fear kite if the shaman needs to med for a second as a plan B. Your plan A is shaman slow is insanely powerful.
