It comes down to their warped sense of entitlement. They know it's free, they know you're spending your spare time to do something with little to no reward... and yet they still think you owe them something and will criticise you for it.
On the opposite side, you have the idiots who think that because the thing is free, that any sort of critical feedback is ungrateful and rude... if you can't handle criticism, then avoid being in a position to receive it.
