It'll likely go that way no matter what, to some level of exchange (not necessarily militarily). China isn't building up south china sea just for shits and giggles. One thing the US has always been is an ocean force to preserve trade routs. Nation building is absolutely lame, but trade is essential across the seas, and even the founding fathers recognized this and when we/they fought in
north africa (1801+).
