With the advent of adding "discouraged workers" to the data collection of the unemployment numbers in the past few decades has caused the unemployment rate not to be indicative of what portion of population actually works. However, this is the same case in many of the European countries data collection as well. So not a counter argument, but should be noted we really don't have hard data on how many people are actually not working.
