My best guess is, it somehow has to do with or resemble some effects of quantum entanglement. Like as if somehow light and data or observation can share a physical property, separately in different locations. Like... how the native Americans didn't like cameras, that it would steal their soul, or a part of them. Maybe somehow the observation or recording of the data makes a link with the photons, effecting the original by the copy.
