The method of observation interfered with the electrons. Last I checked you need to blast electrons with energy (Photons I think) to observe them in any way.

My best guess is, it somehow has to do with or resemble some effects of quantum entanglement. Like as if somehow light and data or observation can share a physical property, separately in different locations. Like... how the native Americans didn't like cameras, that it would steal their soul, or a part of them. Maybe somehow the observation or recording of the data makes a link with the photons, effecting the original by the copy.
This could also be outside the dimensions of time and space, an effect before the event even takes place. Just throwing that in for a little extra foofaraw
