The reason people like vanilla EQ pvp is because someone wearing shit they picked up while leveling in Unrest, MM, Guk, etc aren't going to get automatically shit stomped by a raid geared toon. Plus you don't have insanely overpriced and difficult to acquire class defining spells to deal with. Also, with a few exceptions in zones like South Karana or OOT, dying isn't that big of a deal because you're 5 minutes from a druid/wiz portal pretty much anywhere.
It may not have been a PVP utopia but at what point in EQs history was it ever that? PVP was shoehorned in and not even beta tested. Hell, at the start of RZ you could disarm a melees weapons and it would fall on the fucking ground and you could pick it up. I'd argue that PVP for the sake of PVP in EQ has always been pretty dumb, but it was the best in vanilla and got progressively worse in every xpac.
