I've always used an external log parser called YALP (Yet Another Log Parser). I remember a lot of people using Eqcompanion back in the day as well. Now a days I think there are a bunch of new fangled ones that will allow you to spit out dps information through your client and into the games chat channels. I haven't messed around with those yet.
