They can, but why struggle when every man and his dog seems decked out these days? Silver Swiftblade and other items should still be cheap cheap in EC if you want to try.
Plenty of other melee choices out there. If you're really stuck and want something that'll make you some plat, try a druid (dial a port etc) or necro (can level almost naked without any issues)
