the closest youll see to Virtual Reality in your lifetime is the reverse-engineering of human socialization by accumulating mass data and consequent highly convincing and engrossing algorithmic astroturfing of online "social environments" with millions of believable and genuine-seeming interactions to set an approved context that minimizes unwanted messages on major "socialization" sites. If you want a good look at the data collection units/prototype system hybrids see here & here. The latter one has even run public demonstrations of this system in the days where its founder was working to sell it, if you've ever happened to hop on there at the right hour of the right day.
Still more of a complicated statistical clockwork than true AI however. We're a loooong way from that. But it is arguably a form of VR if it presents a complete fabrication that is convincingly real to a human observer, plus can adapt and respond to human interactions in realtime while maintaining convincingness.
