That is pretty simple actually. Years of losing mobs has conditioned them to except YT advantage as a victory condition. It is one of those weird R99 things where both sides can feel they won the battle, because how they define victory is completely different.
I always thought of EQ mass PVP as objective based though, one of the unique things about non instanced open world PVP content.

Thats what also makes it lame because if one team wins the mob they say won, but if the other team gets more yt; they say they won.
I personally would base mass pvp on who gets the mob (what initiated the mass pvp and brought people together to fight).
EQ is a PvE game; thus a PvP server could be concluded to be a PvEvP version of EQ.
