i don't understand the point in purposely losing the fight just so a 3rd party leaderboard shows that you have one less death?

That is pretty simple actually. Years of losing mobs has conditioned them to except YT advantage as a victory condition. It is one of those weird R99 things where both sides can feel they won the battle, because how they define victory is completely different.
I always thought of EQ mass PVP as objective based though, one of the unique things about non instanced open world PVP content.
