If I may suggest leaving a LOT of time to people to submit their entries. This would help preventing "knee-jerk" low quality submissions, and instead let people get used to the idea they are composing something, look for ideas for a while, have them ferment in their heads for a bit, let the final decisions mature a little...
I think this could allow for significantly better average quality of final submissions than if deadline was tight.
And it's not like people are going to lose interest or forget about the contest if it takes too long to complete - there's a a prenerf fungi staff at stake and nobody is forgetting that.
