From what I've read its only real use is to get through Siren's Grotto. Siren's Grotto is a massive pain in the ass, though, so I wouldn't dismiss the item just because it's usefulness has a narrow scope. That being said, as a monk, you can just run through the zone and FD to drop aggro when necessary.
