The issue in the original post above happened to me today. And I made the exact same mistake, handed the focus back again and the named geonid ate it. I've petitioned in game, perhaps I can get my mistake undone. So whatever you do, don't hand it back to him if he doesn't respond to "How can I help" or you might be in the same predicament...
