but you may have less inclination to keep going after dieing, dieing again trying to get back to your corpse, losing your level, and then dieing a third time before finally recovering your stuff (and each of those required 20-30 minute runs just to get back to where you were and costing you another 1-2 hours worth of exp).

This is why the game is worth playing. In my view games that actively screw you over, (you mentioned dark souls) are the bees knees. Stick it out for the first 20levels, i rmbr not having a clue and just asking randoms in games what the hell i should do, after a while it clicked, you will understand and get used to the slower pace. and every 1% of exp you get will become sweet sweet nectar.
