A same-level hybrid has more total XP and therefore eats a larger chunk of the pie.

You are correct if you base your grouping on level alone, which I think most do, because it's an easy identifier. Because splits are done based on total XP points, and a level 20 ranger needs a decent amount more total XP to be 20, than a level 20 warrior.
