Can't delete characters for the many reasons already discussed, but there's precious little valid objection to the notion of adding a couple X's to the end of the name of any very low-level character that hasn't been used for some excessive length of time. I wouldn't care if my Hole Key mule became soandsoXX instead of soandso.
Of course it's unlikely anything will change, so the best you can do is choose a longer name and make sure the first three or four letters spell out something you like. That's the only portion of a name most folks refer to others by in chat anyway.
