Like you mention, Kag, it's about perception. If a person passes, they don't need to force pronouns out of anyone. If not... I think it's a matter of respect for another human being to call them what they're going for if there's obvious effort being put forth. And to deliberately not do so is going to be taken as extremely disrespectful. Whether or not you choose to do so, that's up to you.
