Except no one in MMORPG are running around naked. Even In DAOC gear Is a factor, or else there wouldn't be a point in leveling to acquire said gear.
Every piece of gear makes you that much more effective in combat. If I ever want to reach the pinnacle of PvP combat, I will need the gear to survive those encounters would I not? End game pvp is where it takes the most skill to pvp, correct? It's silly to act like end game gear isn't a factor in this.
Unless you want to forever pvp at the lowest and least meaningful levels, how Is wanting to experience the end game PvP, where skill matters the most, mediocre?

It looks like the 'naked' part gave you tunnel vision. Gear should never overshadow player skill in a PvP game, period. In other PvP games of value and substance you can have significantly inferior gear and still be effective if your skill level is up to par.
Let's not substitute player strategy, dexterity and acumen with an outside element like gear - because then the time you spend hoarding a camp to get a piece of gear starts to inject itself into PvP at its core. Where it doesn't belong.
