Like the above poster stated, make sure you are charming low blues (you can check the wiki to find out what exact level certain mobs are). A mob 5 levels below you will less likely resist and/or break charm early than say a mob 1 level under you.
And I usually snare both mobs, or snare my pet and root the mob hes fighting. It will get a little easier in Velious when root and snare stack
