played my monk in rags from 1 to 59 without epic or fungus didn't die in pvp until lvl 52 when i engaged people at lvl 60 in kc (there was 8 level range back then)
pretty sure anyone with smarts can play to 60 without dying, putting yourself in the situation you explain is no one to blame but yourself
